Books with Pals

Books with Pals is our monthly book club, held on the Fourth Thursday of each month!

Are you looking for a Portland Book Club event where you can meet cool people, have smart conversations, and still look at pretty pictures? Well you’re in luck!

Books with Pals is our monthly Graphic Novel Book club, hosted by our very own Elizabeth. Each month we pick a graphic novel, share it as much as possible, and then meet up to discuss! You know, normal book club activities.

On occasion we even have Special guests- join us to meet your favorite authors and artists and discuss these books with their very creators! Get a deeper insight, a new perspective, or just come to gush about how much you loved it.

By Kasia Babis

Rating: Older Teen and Up

Genre: Memoir

Length: 256 Pages

Join us Thursday, April 23th from 5:30 to 6:30 PM to discuss!

This moving graphic memoir is a coming-of-age story set in Poland as the country transitions from communism to capitalism. Perfect for fans of Persepolis!

In the late 1980s, Poland faces debilitating food shortages, worker discontent, and astronomical inflation. Seemingly overnight, the country transitions from communism to capitalism. During this period of flux, Kasia Babis is born.

In the shadow of national change, Kasia experiences her own journey of growth, from rebellious teen to politically minded activist. She grapples with her country’s deep-rooted Catholicism and forges her own beliefs, leading to her becoming an active part of Poland’s left-wing Razem party. Kasia fights to uphold her progressive values while her country heads in the opposite direction, and learns firsthand that broader societal upheavals reverberate on a deeply personal level.

? FAQ ?

Is this an Indoor or an Outdoor Event?
Books with Pals is typically held indoors, as our meetings tend to max out at about 7 or 8 people. Even our most well attended night had us at 12! As the meetings fluctuate, we may need to take it outside if the weather permits, but until then, you can assume we’ll all be nice and cozy.

Do I have to wear a mask?
Books with Pictures is currently Mask Optional, in compliance with the latest data from the Multnomah County Health Department’s COVID statistics. That being said, as a community, we would love it if you wore a mask while we’re all huddled in a group- but no one will force you to.

What’s the age zone on this?
We generally pick books that are aimed at adults, though we occasionally will pick up a YA book as well. The group is primarily made up of adults, but if a teenager has permission to come and read with us, then we won’t stop them. Everyone should have access to a good book and a place to talk about it!

Can we suggest books?
If you have a killer idea for a graphic novel we should read then please let us know! Go ahead and message us on Instagram or email Elizabeth at elizabeth@bookswithpictures.com with your idea.

I’m an author! I want to share my book with your club!
Heck yeah friend! Same as above, go ahead and message Elizabeth at elizabeth@bookswithpictures.com and make sure you let her know why your book would be a good fit.
