Kamishibai and the Roots of Manga in Japan’s Performative Comics

Even before the Golden Age of Comics kamishibai (“paper theater”) flourished as a form of performative sequential art in Japan. Part comics, part live storytelling, kamishibai tales ran the gamut from pulp action to westerns to romance, and established many of the tropes and conventions that would later become common in manga. And, years before even Superman and Batman, kamishibai would introduce some of the earliest superheroes the world has ever known.

Joe Streckert, historian, journalist, podcaster, and local hero, will entertain and enlighten on the history of pre-manga sequential art in Japan. Learn more about Joe here:
